5 Facts About Vaping That Everyone Gets Wrong
I was scouring the net earlier and I found a great article on Gizmodo which was about some common misconceptions about Vaping.
As with any new technology there are three things which will always be true. A lack of studies and information, a community of tightly knit die hard supporters and a community of people who believe this is the technology that will end the world as we know it.
Whether it is electric cars by Tesla, smart glasses by Google or a new way use nicotine you will always have these groups of people.
I am going to give a short summary of the article I saw on Gizmodo. If you want to check out the original, full length article itself Click Here to view it.
5. Two completely different products are referred to as “E-Cigs”
An E-Cig is a pre-loaded cartridge style vaporiser which typically comes pre-filled with its own flavors and nicotine concentrations.
An E-Cig is basically an electronic version of a cigarette and most of them are actually manufactured by tobacco companies themselves.
These are the ones that you can buy at gas stations and some of them require you to only replace the cartridge when you are finished whilst others require you to actually replace the entire E-Cig and are considered disposable.
In actual vape shops you will most likely find a type of vaporizer which is referred to as an Advanced Personal Vaporizer which also go by the names Vape pens, APV’s and more.
The difference is APV’s are that they are reusable, customizable and generally thought to be of better quality than E-Cig’s.
4. E-Liquid Ingredients Are A Mystery
Many people assume that E-Liquids that you vape are some mysterious chemical or magical solution but that could not be farther than the truth.
Unless you are buying your E-Juice from some mystery company in China with no reputation then you most likely will be buying from small batch producers in the U.S and Canada.
E-Liquids consist of a main base which will typically be certified organic Vegetable Glycerin.
The Vegetable Glycerin or VG does not carry flavor but produces a lot of vapor.
The next ingredient is the one that stirs up the most controversy. Propylene Glycol is cited to be the main ingredient in antifreeze by some but that is just a mistake.
Antifreeze is made of Diethylene Glycol which is something completely different from PG and is not safe for vaping.
PG is the main ingredient in albuterol which is what is inhaled in asthma puffers and is perfectly safe to inhale when vaped.
PG is used because it is less viscous than VG and carries flavor much, much better. A blend of PG and VG is the most popular formulation.
Flavorings are food grade and can be either artificial or natural and each producer will have their own methods to create rich but not overpowering flavors.
All producers make their E-Juices available in different nicotine strengths which range from 0 nicotine all the way up to 36 milligrams per milliliter.
3. All E-Juices Use Nicotine
As the article from Gizmodo reads – The majority of sales are from zero nicotine to 6mg of nicotine.
As many people use Vaping as a type of Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT the nicotine levels are started at around 21mg when they start vaping and incrementally dropped down.
Once the ex-smoker has decided that they have weaned themselves off for long enough they will eventually phase out nicotine completely.
About half of these smokers will end up quitting smoking and vaping completely whilst the other half will continue to have a vape pen loaded with 0% nicotine E-Liquid for those emergency situations when there is a high probability of relapse.
For many people this situation is when they are intoxicated. Inhibitions are loose and common sense is sparse. A 0% E-Liquid could mean the difference between another day smoke free or a devastating relapse.
2. Vapor Is Worse Than Cigarettes
Most people hear that vaping is either very bad or very good for you.
The truth is that high quality, long term, unbiased studies are hard to come by.
While many articles like this one say that vaping is 95% less harmful than cigarettes, the truth is that we really will not know for many years to come.
Remember how long it took cigarettes or asbestos to be found as carcinogenic? It is because real studies take time, effort and government cooperation to complete.
1. People Don’t Really Quit Smoking if They Are Vaping
Being an ex-smoker myself I will be able to answer this one very well.
When you quit smoking you cannot trade it for anything else – including vaping- and claim to have quit.
If you are vaping because you believe it is less harmful you still have a nicotine addiction. You may of quit smoking but you did not do it right.
Check out our article about Smoking Vs Vaping.
To correctly use vaping to quit smoking you need to think of vaping as you would any other NRT.
For example when you start using “the patch” which I have tried many times and did not do a good job for me at all, you will need to start with a high nicotine dosage and gradually lower that dosage until you completely stop using the patch.
Until you have completely cut out the patch you will never truly be free of the addiction.
You need to go into vaping with the same mind set. Vape with nicotine and slowly reduce the concentration of it.
Once you are comfortable with eliminating it completely then give it a shot.
If you fail, try again and if you succeed well good for you! You have successfully done something that most people cannot do and it also happens to be the absolute most impactful thing you can do for your own health.
